In the vibrant world of marching bands and music associations, there exists an orchestra of challenges that resonate on a local scale. In this blog, we will delve into these local challenges, but this journey will definitely not stop at the local level.
These dedicated communities, filled with passionate rudimental drummers and marching band enthusiasts, often face hurdles that test their resolve and ingenuity. From the struggle to engage the next generation of musicians, to the financial constraints that cast a shadow on their endeavors, these local challenges have become all too familiar.
To truly orchestrate change and overcome these challenges, marching bands, music associations and drum corps must not perceive each other as competitors, but rather as partners working towards a shared ‘crescendo’: making the community even grow. It is within this collaborative spirit that we find the key to unlocking a brighter future for the rudimental drumming community. The answers to local challenges lie in global answers. Here’s why.
Local challenges
In the world of marching bands, drum corps and music associations, local challenges cast a shadow on the rhythmic melodies that once echoed through the streets multiple times a year. One of the most pressing challenges is the endeavor to engage the next generation of musicians and volunteers. In an era dominated by rapidly evolving technology and diverse recreational options, capturing the attention and dedication of young individuals is no small feat. Many marching bands grapple with the task of inspiring a passion for this unique art form in the hearts of the youth. The allure of modern entertainment and the demands of a fast-paced world often overshadow the traditional-ish appeal of marching bands, and even more the dedication it takes to become a high-level performer in a drum corps or orchestra.

Financial difficulties further exacerbate the local challenges faced by our organizations. Limited resources, rising costs, and the diminished amount of members place significant strains on their budgets. Funding for instruments, uniforms, travel expenses, and practice facilities can be scarce, impeding their ability to deliver (exceptional) performances and sustain their operations. The struggle to secure consistent financial support endanger the very existence of music associations, stifling their growth and leaving them at a crossroads.
As we acknowledge these challenges, it becomes evident that addressing them requires more than local remedies - if you can find any. To find lasting solutions, we must adopt a global perspective and embrace collaboration as the cornerstone of progress.
The power of collaboration
In the realm of drum corps and similar organizations, the power of collaboration shines as a guiding beacon, illuminating a path to overcome local challenges and create a vibrant global community. By embracing the spirit of partnership, music associations can unlock a symphony of possibilities that transcends individual limitations.
Collaboration, at its core, involves building bridges between different marching bands, music associations, drum corps, percussion groups et cetera. Rather than perceiving each other as competitors vying for the same resources and recognition, our organizations should come together to share knowledge, resources, and experiences. The collective wisdom and expertise will become catalysts for growth, fostering a sense of camaraderie and cooperation that propels the entire community forward.
Rather than perceiving each other as competitors vying for the same resources and recognition, our organizations should come together to share knowledge, resources, and experiences.
One shining example of collaboration can be seen in the Society of International Rudimental Drummers and the international symposia they’ve organized. By organizing joint events where multiple drummers from across the globe come together, new opportunities for creativity and shared experiences emerge. These events provide a platform for musicians to learn from one another, exchange ideas, and create a harmonious ensemble that showcases the diversity and talent within the drummers community. Collaborative performances not only captivate audiences but also serve as a reminder of the strength that lies in unity. This is for instance exactly what we’ve witnessed during the performance of the Grey Coats at Delft Tattoo in 2018.
Another impactful form of collaboration lies in educational initiatives. By establishing mentorship programs, workshops, and clinics, experienced musicians and educators can share their knowledge and skills with aspiring rudimental drummers. These programs create opportunities for growth, nurturing the talent within the community and inspiring the next generation of musicians. Through collaboration, seasoned drummers can impart their expertise, ensuring that the art of rudimental drumming remains vibrant and evolves with the times. However, not every marching band has this very inspiring teacher or drummer, so that’s exactly why collaboration is the solution here.
Mentorship programs create opportunities for growth, nurturing the talent within the community and inspiring the next generation of musicians.
The power of collaboration extends beyond the local sphere, though. The digital era has facilitated global connections, allowing rudimental drummers from different regions to communicate, learn, and collaborate. Online platforms, forums, and social media networks serve as hubs for exchanging ideas, resources, and experiences. This global network fosters a sense of unity, transcending geographical boundaries and bringing together diverse perspectives that enrich the collective understanding of the drummers community.
Global answers: education, mentorship, technology, competition and recognition
To ensure the continued growth and excellence of our wonderful craft of rudimental drumming, global answers and initiatives are crucial. One of the fundamental global answers lies in providing comprehensive educational programs tailored specifically for rudimental drummers. These programs can encompass workshops, summer camps, and online courses led by experienced drummers and instructors. For instance, Gridbook Percussion Academy, Rhythm Monster and Drumeo are doing an amazing job with this.
By imparting technical expertise, sharing performance tips, and nurturing musicality, these educational initiatives serve as springboards for rudimental drummers to refine their skills and unlock their full potential. Such programs not only contribute to individual growth but also elevate the collective standard of rudimental drumming across the global community. While Gridbook Percussion Academy is focused on the DCI-style of drumming, Rhythm Monster on pipe band drumming and Drumeo on drum-kit drummers, there should be more initiatives covering all the different styles of rudimental drumming.
Mentorship programs play a vital role in shaping the future of rudimental drummers as well. Establishing mentorship frameworks that pair seasoned drummers with aspiring musicians fosters a sense of guidance, encouragement, and personal connection. Mentors can provide valuable insights, offer constructive feedback, and inspire the next generation of rudimental drummers to reach new heights. Through mentorship, a strong lineage of talent is cultivated, ensuring the perpetuation of the art form and the preservation of its rich traditions. For instance, we at Rudimental Drummers run a small mentorship program called ‘The Next Generation Drumline’, that brings together talented drummers from different marching bands in the Netherlands with a couple of more seasoned drummers.

Embracing technology opens up endless possibilities for global collaboration and learning. Online platforms can serve as hubs for rudimental drummers to connect, exchange ideas, and seek inspiration. These digital spaces facilitate communication, enabling drummers from different parts of the world to share their experiences, techniques, and compositions. Moreover, virtual collaborations and ensemble performances create opportunities for rudimental drummers to collaborate with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds, resulting in innovative and boundary-pushing musical expressions.
Competitions and showcases also play a vital role in the global advancement of rudimental drummers. Think about how the Drum Corps International competition evolved the whole activity to the next level. International competitions provide a platform for showcasing technical competence, creativity, and musicality. By participating in these events, rudimental drummers gain exposure, receive feedback from expert judges, and create networks that transcend geographical boundaries. Competitions not only fuel healthy competition but also foster a spirit of camaraderie and mutual growth among drummers, inspiring them to continuously push the boundaries of their craft. We were so happy to see the Royal Dutch Music Organization organized a Dutch National Championships for marching bands again this year.

Furthermore, it is essential to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of rudimental drummers on a global scale. Highlighting success stories, sharing performance videos, and acknowledging outstanding contributions through awards and honors, or just simple a like on a social media post, can inspire and motivate aspiring drummers. By shining a spotlight on the achievements of rudimental drummers, the global community can rally around their talent, offering support and validation that propels them to greater heights.
Through these global answers, rudimental drummers can thrive within the drummers community. Skill development, education, mentorship, technology, and recognition converge to create an ecosystem that nurtures talent and ensures the continued evolution of rudimental drumming. Embrace collaboration as a fundamental pillar of growth. Reach out to neighboring bands to explore joint performances, shared resources, and educational efforts. By fostering a spirit of unity, we can collectively overcome local challenges.
Take initiative and seek opportunities to expand your musical horizons. Engage in online communities, join educational programs, and connect with drummers from different styles and cultures. Embrace mentorship and share your knowledge with aspiring drummers. Together, we, which means: including you, can elevate the art of rudimental drumming and inspire the next generation of musicians.
